Last week we previewed the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa and our headline tip Lee Slattery failed to impress. He closed with a round of eight over par in a week where our tips never really threatened the places. This week we look for a better return at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, which is staged at the Gary Player Country Club in South Africa.
The Nedbank Golf Challenge is one of the oldest Tour events and is always an interesting prospect early in the season. The event recently moved from being a 12 man challenge to a more inclusive 30 man event. The field this year looks very strong with a number or high ranked players competing for a large amount of prize money at Sun City.
The course itself is a brute. It measures out at more than 7,800 yards with narrow fairways. Despite this winning scores have often been low, with players shooting -15 under or better for the four days on route to winning this event. A key area of the course is holes 9 and 10 which offer two reachable par 5s. It is important to be at the very least under par for these two holes on this track.
With the course being so long a key factor this week will undoubtedly be all round driving. It is key here to be accurate, and being long provides a huge advantage. Another key factor round this course is that debutants tend to fair quite poorly on this course. That being said we haven’t neglected the debutants this year as there is a massive amount of talent emerging on the European Tour. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a first timer win this week, given the skill level of some of the younger players on the tour. Also who can forget Danny Willet’s victory last year in his first crack at the event!
1.5 Pts E/W (1-4) Martin Kaymer 22/1 (Betfair)
Given all the above this week we go for a past champion in the shape of Martin Kaymer who looks a good price on a familiar track. He won this event back in 2012 and has great course knowledge. He is a player who on a good week has both the accuracy and length to be able to take advantage of what the course offers. The 2015 season was one to forget for Kaymer given his career record, but he closed the season well finishing in a tie for 10th in his last start in Dubai. He will be looking to get the 2016 season off to a great start here and we think he really has a great chance of challenging for the win this week.
